Prototyping

Brief: Propose a cost-effective, sustainably produced alternative for the YBS medallion band that goes with the overall ethos of the Samman.

The band was created by sewing the machine-embroidered piece with a backing of felt to strengthen and provide reinforcement to the band.

Current Ethos of Samman

  • A celebration

  • Gratitude towards service

  • For individuals who have made a mark

  • Impact

  • Transformative work

Quilting

Crochet

Techniques

Began with trying out different textile techniques for the medallion band. These include Quilting, Crochet, Embroidery, etc. The aim was to find a technique that complimented and added value to the ethos of the Samman.

Identity

“Be the change you wish to see in the world.”

Where does this change begin?

How does one act towards helping others ripple through time?

What impact do these acts create on the lives of others?

EXPLORATIONS

Pattern

For the design of the band, we studied the previous ethos of the Samman and ideated on motifs/patterns that would visually represent our concept best and add aesthetical value without taking away focus from the medallion itself.

Digital Pattern

We then proceeded to make digital pattern explorations.

Final Technique

 EMBROIDERY

We chose embroidery as our final technique. Embroidery also serves as a metaphor to our concept as it creates impressions on the cloth.

KHADI

Material

Why Khadi?

"India lives in its villages"

This above quote by Mahatma Gandhi is one of the Yashraj Research Foundation's key guiding principles.

Khadi represented self-reliance and self-sufficiency during the colonial rule. It became a symbol of Indian pride and a way to assert national identity, thereby strengthening the freedom movement and fostering a sense of unity among the people.

Khadi serves as a symbol of upliftment of the rural economy and improving the standard of living in villages, as demonstrated by Gandhi ji.

Beige

Maroon

Maroon

According to colour psychology, maroon is associated with control, responsibility, thoughtfulness, and confidence.

Maroon can even conjure feelings of spirituality, wisdom, and calm.

Beige

Beige has the warmth of brown and the light crispness of white.

It also provides an excellent base for a colour like Maroon.

Final Design Exploration

YBS in their previous design constituted the concept of Ekant and Bindu in their medallion. To create a holistic design for the new band, we emphasised the center of each ripple/impression.

Stitched Band

After studying our final prototype, we decided to make a change in the spacing between the embroidery patterns. The reason behind this was that we did not want the band to take away the focus from the Samman medallion but rather enhance it as a whole.
